Eyes Open | Eyes Closed
To calm the nerves during shelter in place, I participated in a virtual workshop meant to re-awaken the creative spirit. It was a simple pinch pot exercise. With all the years I’ve been doing ceramics, I had never tried this age-old way of making. The directions were simple: take two lumps of clay, start one one with eyes open, and the other with eyes closed, pinching upwards.
The process of weaving clay involves a lot of preparation before one can begin. And also a certain amount of stress.
Pinching and coiling had an immediacy and slowness that drew me in.
This method awakened my natural attraction to organic forms, unlocking the truest expression of shapes and feelings.
